Digital Adressable Light Interface
Regulation down to 1%
DALI
Work to develop a digital standard for the
lighting industry began in 1996. By the autumn of 1999 the standard was
ready, and named DALI - Digital Addressable Light Interface. Unlike the
digital DSI system, DALI features two-way communication with the
luminaire. You can tell whether the tubes are working correctly, and at
what lighting level they are.
The greatest revolution however, is
that the luminaires are addressable. In total there are 64 available
addresses before you need to use a router. These 64 addresses can be
split across 16 zones. This opens up new possibilities for flexibility
in lighting with restructuring of buildings. Price is the principle
difference between this and an ordinary BUS system. The limitation is
that the DALI protocol only relates to lighting.
The DALI system
also makes it cheaper to integrate lighting control into a BUS system.
This works by using an interface from the current system over the DALI
system. With this, you get access to 64 addresses and 16 zones by using a
node/router from the current system.
The luminaires suitable for
the DALI system must use control units suitable for DALI. Specific
software for the DALI system has been developed which makes it possible
to run central control from a PC.
