Svalbard Global Seed Vault

reference_svalbard_global_seed_vault_lager

The facility preserves a wide variety of plant seeds in an underground cavern. The seeds are duplicate samples, or "spare" copies, of seeds held in gene banks worldwide. The seed vault will provide insurance against the loss of seeds in gene banks, as well as a refuge for seeds in the case of large scale regional or global crises.

The seeds are stored in four-ply sealed envelopes, then placed into plastic tote containers on metal shelving racks. The storage rooms are kept at −18 °C (0 °F). The low temperature and limited access to oxygen will ensure low metabolic activity and delay seed aging. The permafrost surrounding the facility will help maintain the low temperature of the seeds if the electricity supply should fail.

Construction of the 1500 m2 seed vault, which cost approximately NOK 45 million (US$9 million), was funded entirely by the Government of Norway.

The lighting solution was provided by Glamox Luxo Lighting in cooperation with Barlindhaug Consult and installer Jensen Elektriske in Tromsø. View reference
