The phrase lighting control describes change and control of the light output from the luminaire. The parameters which are changed and controlled are:
- the distribution of lighting
- levels (lighting strength/luminance)
- spectral distribution (lighting colours)
Control can be manual or automatic and can apply to individual luminaires or groups of luminaires.
In this chapter we look at control of levels for individual and groups of luminaires. Individual or groups of luminaires can be dimmed continually, or in steps, as well as switched completely on/off.
Manual control, as well as automatic are both possible. The most important thing is to estimate requirements at an early point, to avoid unnecessary costs.
An optimal lighting control system can save up to 70% of your energy costs, if it uses an electronic ballast (HF). Movement and daylight detector controls, could give additional savings.
Modular offices in an office building are occupied only about 50% of the time, on average. Daylight contributes between 30 - 60% of the light of a work desk, depending on surroundings. Energy saving is roughly proportional for light levels with light dimming and fluorescent lights. It is these facts which factor in a modern lighting control system, see figure.
