Lifeboat stations, life raft stations and assembly/meeting points are provided on cruise vessels in case of emergency situations such as a fire or if the ship is in danger of sinking. As with all other areas, rescue areas also have particular demands on installed lighting equipment. The required lighting solution must operate in all weather conditions and should also provide a safe working environment when maintenance on lifeboats and davits is being carried out.
Special demands for rescue areas
It is important to install spotlights and floodlights to illuminate the surface of the sea in order to identify rescue boats and life rafts to enable people to disembark from the cruise ship. This lighting must provide instantaneous light output from the moment it is switched on. Emergency (battery-powered) back up lighting must also be installed in case of power failure/black-out situations.

For embarking launched life rafts or for maneuvering lifeboats and rescue boats at night, it is important to have sufficient light at sea level. Powerful spotlights facing downwards onto the sea illuminate the surface of the water and help the crew to attach the life rafts to rescue boats to be towed out of the dangerous area.
In emergency situations, time is critical and so there is no time to wait for discharge lamps to warm up. Light must be available instantly to reduce the risk of injuries.
Emergency backup lighting systems
In a black-out situation, lighting must have a backup system, either centralised or decentralised with an integrated battery backup system.
The challenge for outdoor areas is not only the rain and spray water, but also the light fixtures must withstand intensive cleaning, using brushes, chemicals, other tools and sometimes high-pressure cleaners.
