Faced with rising operational costs and new environmental regulations under the RoHS directive, Trondheim Municipality made the decision to modernize the lighting system at Stavset Elementary School, located southwest of Trondheim.

The Brief

The school required an energy-efficient and future-proof lighting solution that could be installed with minimal disruption to daily activities. Given limited budgets and resources, the solution also needed to be scalable — allowing the project to be implemented in phases over time.

In addition to energy savings, there was a strong focus on improving the learning environment by reducing lighting-related issues such as headaches and concentration difficulties among students and staff.

The Solution

Glamox provided a complete, tailored lighting upgrade that addressed all of Stavset Primary School’s requirements. The first phase involved the replacement of 132 existing pendant luminaires in classrooms with new Glamox C70-P LED luminaires, equipped with integrated sensors and wireless communication capabilities. This setup enabled both presence and daylight control without the need for extensive wiring modifications.

The installation was carried out by local partner Buvik Elektro, who praised the simplicity and cost-effectiveness of the retrofit project, allowing the school to continue its daily operations with minimal disruption. They said "In collaboration with Glamox, we quickly found an effective luminaire that could replace the old ones and came with integrated sensors and wireless communication. Additionally, the product was delivered with cable and plug, so the installation 'went smoothly.' The wireless 'EnOcean' switches could easily be placed wherever the teachers wanted."

The Result

Following the installation of the new lighting system, Stavset Primary School has seen tangible improvements in both energy efficiency and the well-being of its users. The intelligent, sensor-driven LED luminaires have significantly reduced the school's energy consumption and maintenance needs, helping to lower operating costs. According to Department Head Ståle Hammern, teachers and students have also reported a better indoor environment, with fewer complaints about headaches, eyestrain, and concentration difficulties.

The wireless lighting control system has not only provided immediate benefits but also future-proofs the school for further upgrades and expansions. The flexibility of the EnOcean switches and the scalability of the wireless network mean that new areas can be easily added as the retrofit project continues in phases.
