Project overview

Dundrum Town Centre in south county Dublin is Ireland’s largest shopping centre with over 170 tenants, more than 120,000 square metres of floor space and over 3,400 car parking spaces. It opened in March 2005 and is visited by more than 20 million people every year. From the day it opened, the enormous multistorey car park was lit by 4,000 Glamox MIR T5 conventional luminaires with 2x49W fluorescent tubes, using a lot of electricity and costing a substantial amount of money in tube changes and other maintenance. After ten years Dundrum Town Centre wanted to cut down on its use of energy in the car park areas, which would not only save a lot of money, but also increase the centre’s green credentials and save on maintenance. This can be achieved using

  • MIR T5. This is a high quality industrial/marine long life luminaire, developed for areas with temperatures from -25 to +40 Degrees Celsius. The luminaire has a wide variety of installation options, minimal maintenance and excellent overall economy.
  • Glamox i85 LED can be used to reach the current standard for car parks EN 12464-1
  • Glamox i40 is versatile and robust luminaire which makes it suitable in a range of demanding areas. For optimised energy savings, some variants can be supplied with integrated sensor for motion and most of the variants can be delivered with integrated emergency light.

Solution

Glamox Ireland was able to propose a solution which made it unnecessary to replace all those luminaires. Instead of replacing the entire luminaire, the solution involved replacing the conventional tubes with LED inside the existing 4,000 luminaire housings. Our process of switching from tubes to LED is fast and easy. It takes no more time than a normal tube change. All that is needed is changing the gear tray.

Many different options were tested in sample areas of the car park. The solution which provided the best energy savings and right light levels was in fact a refit gear tray developed especially for the project.

LED solutions from Glamox typically can handle ambient temperatures of +45° to -30°C. In the Dundrum Town Centre car park only a span from +30° to 0°C is required. By constructing a replacement kit with a different type of LED modules and drivers we were able to offer a refit solution which had the required lumen package of 6500lm, but with a particularly low wattage of only 47W. This represents a huge saving over the lifetime of the gear tray. The work was carried out during the second half of 2015.

Amazing savings and short payback times

As a result of changing from 2x49W luminaires with T5 fl uorescent tubes to our LED refit solution, Dundrum Town Centre will have an annual saving of 1.5 million KW hours. Along with reduced maintenance and running costs this will provide the centre with savings of 2.4 million Euro over the next ten years.

This means that Dundrum Town Centre will have a payback time on this investment of less than two years!
