Electricity costs for lighting expected to halve in Norway’s oldest school

Glamox to provide energy-efficient LED lighting for Trondheim Cathedral School

Glamox is providing its energy-efficient LED lighting for an ambitious project to renovate and expand the Trondheim Cathedral School. Glamox is providing more than 1,600 LED luminaires to replace conventional lighting in four existing buildings and two new buildings. The new lights are expected to reduce the school’s lighting-related electricity costs by 50%. The renovation project is scheduled to be completed in Autumn 2025.

Trondheim Cathedral School is a unique 870-year-old institution in Trondheim. Founded in 1152, it is Norway’s oldest school and is known for its classes in music, dance, drama, media, and communication. In an ongoing renovation project, the school's listed and protected buildings will be linked to two new buildings totaling 4,0002 m. The existing building stock is approximately 10,0002 m.

Trondheim County Municipality and contractor Betonmast Trøndelag have set ambitious environmental targets for the school renovation. The two new buildings will be net-zero and make use of recycled materials such as expanded polystyrene insulation made from recycled fish boxes.

“Our two new zero-emission buildings will generate renewable electricity to offset any greenhouse gas emissions they produce. It’s therefore imperative we do our utmost to reduce emissions, and our new energy-efficient lighting has a big role to play in this,” said Lars Henrik Rygh, Assistant Principal at Trondheim Cathedral School. “The new lighting is long-lasting, which will enable us to reduce our maintenance costs as well. It’s core to our sustainability approach.”

Glamox’s contract is with Argon Elektro AS which is undertaking the installation of the lighting.

“The restoration of ‘Katta’ in Trondheim is a prestigious project. That, in turn, creates high expectations for delivering professional lighting solutions. Glamox has gone the extra mile to deliver just what we want. Together we are helping to transform Norway’s oldest school and reduce emissions," says Eirik Rosmo, Electrician at Argon Elektro AS.
