“Fluorescent lights are being phased out completely. When stocks run out we won’t be able to purchase more, so we decided to act now rather than risk any disruption. At the same time, by switching to connected LED lighting, we’ll reduce the amount of electricity we use for lighting by 70% or more. Also, it will help us to reduce our carbon footprint and reduce our energy and maintenance costs,” said Stefan Gustavsson, who is managing the project for the property company Örebroporten Fastigheter AB, which owns the Conventum Kongress and Arena.
The Conventum Kongress, which opened in 2004, is a multi-purpose building that can be configured to accommodate 1,470 people at a congress, 2,400 people at a standing concert, or 1,280 people at a banquet. The Kongress also includes the Forum, an exhibition hall of 500 square meters. The Conventum Arena is a 4,800 square metre multi-purpose arena which was completed in 2008. It hosts events such as trade shows, conventions, banquets, kick-offs, concerts and sporting events.
“We are relighting the Kongress and Arena, as well as the offices, cloakrooms, meeting rooms, and dressing rooms. Eitech will swap out the existing luminaires on the run so that no events are disrupted. Most of the work will be done between events, with the job completed by the end of 2025,” said Andreas Berglund, Managing Director of Glamox in Sweden. “This retrofit project is the tip of the iceberg as an estimated 250 million fluorescent luminaires need to be replaced across Europe due to the EU directive.”
The EU Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) directive is aimed at eliminating products containing potentially hazardous materials, such as mercury found inside fluorescent tubes. From 25 August 2023, the most popular linear (T5 and T8) fluorescent tubes were phased out. Sales from stock are permitted until they run out, hence the need to switch to LED lighting.
Glamox is providing a comprehensive range of LED lighting for the two buildings, including connected linear luminaires, spotlights, downlights, and outdoor lighting. Around 90% of the luminaires will be controlled and managed by a DALI light management system.
The electrical consultants on the project are BELA Elprojekt. Eitech will complete the installation in December this year.
