Cruise vessels have impressive silhouettes. When approaching target destination ports in darkness, the perfect light installation will illuminate hull lines and strong funnel spotlights will keep the cruise ship’s logo visible over long distances. The required lighting solutions must operate in all weather conditions.

Different areas on the ship require special demands for lighting
Over the board lighting installations are exposed to harsh weather conditions. This means that as well as achieving a reliable and even distribution of light output, it is also important to achieve the correct light colours, light intensity and a robust, stable light fixture for long term reliability, withstanding the rough conditions in severe weather environments. Using the most appropriate material for the light fixture is important in order to ensure robustness and a longer operating life of the fixture.

Important factors when working with lighting solutions for over the board areas:
- IP class.
- Mechanical strength/impact resistance.
- No maintenance and reduced power consumption (high energy efficiency).

IP class

The challenge for over the board areas is not only to protect the lighting from rain and spray water, but also to ensure that the light fixture can withstand the continuous impact forces from waves in heavy seas. In addition, the light fixtures must also survive intensive cleaning, using brushes, chemicals, other tools and often high-pressure cleaners.

Mechanical strength
Using the correct combination of materials in the luminaire is critical in order to ensure robustness and a long operating life. Materials are particularly important here and should be selected to withstand high shock and vibration. Especially for areas where heavy vibrations are present, Glamox recommends the use of LED fittings. LEDs withstand shock and vibration due to the design of the diodes. No additional vibration suspension is required. A wide range of ambient temperatures is also an important demand. Cruise vessels are able to navigate around the world. Ideally, the light output and light quality should be consistent across all temperature bands.

No maintenance and reduced power consumption
An important requirement on-board a cruise vessel is to install luminaires that are virtually maintenance-free. This reduces or eliminates the labour costs primarily associated with the maintenance, servicing and replacement of luminaires in difficult-to-reach locations. The luminaires should consume as little energy as possible in order to reduce the size of power generators, save energy and minimise pollution. Therefore, LED lighting is recommended. LED luminaires are virtually maintenance-free, which means that cruise vessels with LED lighting will have lower operating costs compared to vessels with conventional luminaires. In addition, the reduced power consumption of LED lighting onboard has a positive impact on the cruise vessel’s Air Conditioning system, as less heat is emitted from the lighting, which means less AC power is needed and fuel consumption is reduced. The initial investment of the LED installation may be higher than a traditional lighting installation, but the reduced energy consumption and lower maintenance costs of LED lighting means that this price difference will be quickly recouped and payback on the investment is recovered quickly.
