Craigavon Area Hospital
Emotional and functional hospital lighting
Craigavon Area Hospital is a large teaching hospital in County Armagh, Northern Ireland. It serves an estimated 241,000 people from the surrounding boroughs of Craigavon, Banbridge, Armagh and Dungannon.
The hospital opened in 1972, replacing several older hospitals as the main acute centre in the region. In 2011 Craigavon Area Hospital was granted University Teaching Hospital status by Queen’s University, Belfast.
The plans for the new trauma and orthopedic unit at Craigavon were made by Milligan Reside Larkin Architects. The lighting requirements were calculated by consulting engineers Beattie Flanigan. The lighting design was made by Lloyd Crawford and Gary McElkerney of Chroma Lighting in Belfast.
The building was shortlisted for the prestigious World Architectural News awards
in 2010, against projects from as far afield as South Africa, Sweden and Japan.
